RNZN ANZAC Class Refit Success
|
The ANZAC Class ship HMNZS Te Kaha (F77) has recently completed a refit availability in the Devonport Naval Dockyard where a
number of major Configuration Changes impacting ship performance and habitability were incorporated. HMNZS Te Mana will also
undergo the same configuration changes later this year.
The configuration changes included a major stability and compartment modification according to the design provided by AMT. Amongst other
features, these changes extend the damage sustainment capability of the Ship, also making better use of the quarterdeck area. To this end
the forward part of the quarterdeck was fully plated in, adding to buoyancy and new compartments created for a laundry and crew gymnasium
making life easier for the crew. As a result there were major relocations of equipment on the quarter deck and internal structural changes
to support the new bulkheads and relocated equipment. Further efforts will be applied to correct some pre-refit trim deficiencies.
A further change was the upgrading of the Main Propulsion Diesels from the MTU 1163TB83 to a more powerful MTU 1163 TB93. AMT provided the
design integration for ship systems external to the diesel enclosure including the ship systems and systems interfaces. Part of this change
was the conversion of the engine control system from electro mechanical to a solid state system interfaced to the existing Siemens C+M system.
Sea trials confirmed the satisfactory integration and also that all performance requirements were met or exceeded.
It is expected that all of these changes will enhance the capability and life of the Royal New Zealand Navy ANZAC Class ships.
