AWD Air Warfare Destroyer Project

The Air Warfare Destroyer (AWD) is a key project aimed at providing substantial war-fighting capability to the RAN up to around 2040. One of the key documents in the current acquisition program is the Function and Performance Specification (FPS) which specifies the technical requirements for the AWD. These requirements cover the complete function and performance of the vessel including both Combat and Platform Systems as well as ship related ILS aspects.

To achieve the Commonwealth's timescale AMT was contracted to develop the AWD FPS in accordance with DMO processes and working closely with the DMO (AWDSPO), DGMD, NAVSYSCOM and DSTO. Because of the potential interest of AMT Shareholders in the AWD Program, AMT was able to enter into confidentiality arrangements accepted by its Shareholders and DMO that excluded the AMT shareholders from any knowledge of the specific activity or results developed or viewed by AMT during the contracted task.

The AWD FPS was developed and delivered utilising the DOORS requirements management tool, linked to the AWD OCD. A key challenge for AMT was that the OCD which would normally be expected to be available at the commencement of the FPS development was instead being developed in parallel. However with substantial effort and a very close and cooperative liaison with the Defence stakeholders the required timescales for the completion of the FPS were achieved.
