Under Project Sea1348 Phase 3A USWUP, harpoon missiles are being fitted to the ANZAC Class to provide a Surface to Surface Missile (SSM)
capability. The original ANZAC design had included a space and weight allowance for fitting of Harpoon on 02 Deck between its Mast Modules.
For a number of reasons related to operational considerations and the electronic environment, the Harpoon installation was relocated from
its space and weight position on 02 Deck to a position on 01 Deck forward of the bridge. This raised a large number of new challenges
including potential clashes with chaff flyout and general operation, impacts on bridge and RAS operations as well as the expected structural
and typical ship systems integration issues. A further complicating factor was that the design was being performed within the constraints
being imposed by the concurrent development of a comprehensive safety case in accordance with the latest RAN safety case procedures. This was
the first substantial design activity being undertaken in this manner and it was noticeable that the level and detail of Risk Hazard Analysis
(including such activities as studies into potential flyout collisions of harpoon and other systems such as chaff) was substantial to satisfy
the Objective Quality Evidence [OQE] requirements of the safety case.
AMT performed the principal design and major structural integration of the harpoon launchers into the vessel under contract to Tenix Marine
and the ANZAC Alliance. This included the development of the design via the Design Authority document set up to PDR, coordination activities
and the detail structural design of the launcher foundations and blast deflectors.
In addition to the design role, AMT was also contracted to
perform a number of analyses in support of the development of the safety case. These included 3D spatial analyses to review the impact on
upper deck operations, sprinkler spray patterns on the launchers and an analysis of the potential for collision between the harpoon missiles
on flyout with near simultaneous launch of chaff.

Harpoon launcher concept
A milestone in the Harpoon integration into ANZAC Ships was achieved on Tuesday 7th December 2004 with HMAS WARRAMUNGA conducting a
successful first of class test firing of the Advanced Harpoon Weapon Control System (AHWCS) utilising a Harpoon Blast Test Vehicle off the
WA Coast. The launch test proves the suitability of the design and installation of the system.
After acceptance into service of the first installation, Harpoon will be progressively fitted to the remaining ANZAC Class Ships.
