Changes in the fighting vehicle inventory of the Australian Army have necessitated changes to the LPA Stern Door capability so that it can
handle heavier vehicles, particularly the new Main Battle Tanks. The design has been developed by AMT in several stages to incorporate these
requirements and restore other capabilities that were lost as a result of previous upgrade. The design was required to be approved by Det
Norske Veritas (DNV), the LPA Classification Society.
The design now incorporates a multi-sheaved wire rope system and a new winch providing a variable angle capability for the door. This has
required some changes to the door, replacement of existing sheaves and under-deck stiffening in way of the winch foundation.
The new arrangement now gives the LPAs the capability to handle the new Main Battle Tanks and restores the capability of “swimming” smaller
vehicles onto the ramp.
The design phase is complete, with the first installation now installed on HMAS MANOORA. HMAS KANIMBLA has been similarly
modified in early 2006.
