5” Gun Ammunition Capacity Study | |
|
During the ANZAC Ship design the required gun was changed from a 76mm Oto Melara to a 5" FMC Gun. The current magazines at 3 Deck and 4 Deck
(originally designed to hold 600 rounds of 76mm ammunition) were reconfigured to accept 5" ammunition. Due to physical constraints created by
increased ammunition size the capacity of the magazine was reduced. AMT was tasked to review the current 5" Gun Ammunition Stowage and provide
practical concept solutions to significantly increase the ammunition capacity.
Analysis of the requirements and specifications was conducted and from this, AMT's study examined all possible solutions including
reconfiguration of the existing stowages, extending existing magazines and construction of new magazines both adjacent to, and remote from,
the existing magazines. An initial trade off analysis was conducted by AMT to limit the conceptual solutions to the four solutions that best
suited customer requirements. The four Design Impact Statements and final Trade Off Analysis, including indicative costings, were then
delivered to the customer to assist with selection of the preferred option for further development.
