The installation of a new mine and obstacle avoidance sonar system (MOAS) into the ANZAC Class necessitated some modification to the ships'
degaussing system. The MOAS transducer mounting arrangements directly interfere with a degaussing coil which runs parallel to the ships' centre
line. To maintain the effectiveness of the degaussing coil, an alternative arrangement was developed to enable the transducer
installation to proceed.
As the degaussing cables are easily damaged, it was elected to only modify the section of pipe/coil in the tank by adding additional pipes,
junction boxes and necessary cable support and protection measures.
AMT’s task under the contract to Tenix Marine involved the modelling of the proposed new piping sections to ensure that acceptable paths for
the coils could be ensured in the tank and to design and position the new Junction Boxes and cabling requirements in the compartment directly
above the tank.
Following acceptance of the proposed piping runs at the ANZAC Alliance PDR, AMT developed a work pack detailing the necessary installation
activity.
