RAN Habitability Upgrade

With some years of ANZAC ship operational experience, accommodation and recreation spaces are considered by the RAN as providing less than optimal habitability and space allowance for the existing manning. This has been exacerbated since ship delivery due to the upward creep in ships complement and resulting pressure on existing accommodation areas. Additionally, studies into restructuring the Marine Engineering Department resulted in a change in the rank / billet structure, with accommodation spaces being utilised for different rank levels than anticipated during the design and construction phases of the ANZAC Ship Project.

AMT was requested to conduct a Habitability Feasibility Study into the provision of increased accommodation and recreation space on the ANZAC Ships and to prepare a Report for discussion at the June 2003 ANZAC Forum Habitability Workshop. The study involved assessing every available non-operational space on the ships for possible added accommodation or recreation facilities. Feedback from the Forum was incorporated in the final version of the Report where ten (10) Habitability Options (HO's) were selected for further design development by the ANZAC Class Capability Element Manager.

Preliminary design proposals presented by AMT were approved through the Alliance CEM and ACCCB process in April 2004. Eight (8) HO's were then selected for implementation as part of a Habitability Upgrade to provide added flexibility for additional training bunks, Force Protection personnel, Special Operations personnel and mixed genders onboard the ships, increasing the ships berthing by +11 from 174 to 185 berths (The additional +11 berths have a ranking mix of +2 Officers, +2 CPO's, +2 PO's & +5 JR's).
The proposals have been implemented in part on HMAS ANZAC, in full on HMAS ARUNTA with the remaining ships to follow.

"Overall, have been very happy with AMT's performance on this project. The staff have been attentive to the customers needs and have rescheduled to meet deadlines without quibbling."….."Documentation has been of a very high standard."
Phil Smithdale, ANZAC Alliance Platform Systems Engineer - Habitability Project Manager.

"Captain Griggs (ANZCEM & ACCCB Chairman) also repeated … during the ACCCB meeting in that he was very pleased with the quality, approach and manner that the ASA team had taken in preparing this work to meet an extremely tight and demanding schedule. Well done to … all… involved!."
Darryl Griffiths, ANZAC Alliance Platform Systems Manager
